Can Yogi and Mamata Secure Key By-Election Wins? Pressure Mounts in UP and West Bengal

Can Yogi and Mamata Secure Key By-Election Wins? Pressure Mounts in UP and West Bengal"

The future of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, who could be a future prime ministerial candidate, depends on the results of nine crucial assembly by-elections next month. Yogi, known as a strong Hindutva leader, faces a tough challenge in securing wins for the BJP.

Meanwhile, West Bengal’s Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, another potential prime ministerial candidate, is also facing six important by-elections on November 13. These contests are the first for her party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), since a shocking event shook the state: the tragic rape and murder of a young woman doctor in Kolkata’s government-run hospital. This crime has sparked massive protests by junior doctors and the public, calling for justice and reforms in the health system, bringing intense national attention to West Bengal.

While Yogi Adityanath's position appears vulnerable, Mamata Banerjee seems to be in a stronger position. Despite ongoing protests, her Trinamool Congress is expected to perform well in the by-elections. Unlike in UP, where there’s a sense of political uncertainty, Mamata’s TMC remains confident.

Why By-Elections May Not Affect Mamata’s Hold:

  • TMC’s Lead in Seats: Out of the six seats, five were held by the TMC, giving them an advantage. Only one seat, Madarihat, was held by the BJP.
  • Protests Limited to Urban Areas: The protests, primarily led by middle-class professionals, are centered in Kolkata, far from the areas where the by-elections will occur.
  • No Political Influence in the Movement: The movement has kept political parties out, meaning the BJP, Congress, and Left parties haven’t gained ground from the unrest.
  • Protesters’ Trust in Mamata: The movement doesn’t aim to remove Mamata; instead, people hope she will address corruption and improve governance. This shows the trust the people still have in her leadership.

Mamata Banerjee’s calm approach and open discussions with protesters have helped her avoid direct conflict with the movement. Her position in the upcoming by-elections seems secure, while Yogi Adityanath faces a more challenging path.
