Canada's Opposition Cancels Diwali Celebration on Parliament Hill Amid India-Canada Diplomatic Tensions
Canada’s opposition leader Pierre Poilievre has canceled the annual Diwali celebrations on Parliament Hill, a move seen as linked to the ongoing tensions between Canada and India. The event, organized by the Overseas Friends of India Canada (OFIC) group, has been an annual tradition for over 23 years, celebrating Diwali with Hindu, Buddhist, Jain, and Sikh communities across Canada.
Shiv Bhasker, OFIC’s president, expressed disappointment over the cancellation in a letter to the opposition leader’s office. "For over two decades, Diwali celebrations here have united Canadian Hindus, Buddhists, Jains, Sikhs, and all Canadians in joy and unity," Bhasker wrote. He added that recent diplomatic issues have left the community feeling "betrayed and unjustly singled out."
Meanwhile, the U.S. took a different stance with President Joe Biden hosting a large Diwali gathering at the White House, attended by over 600 Indian-Americans. Relations between India and Canada have become tense following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s allegations against India, claiming New Delhi’s involvement in the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a known Khalistani separatist. India has firmly denied these allegations, calling them "absurd."
