China Warns Taiwan: Trump’s “America First” Approach Could Mean Less Support if He Wins the Election
China suggested on Wednesday that if Donald Trump wins the upcoming U.S. presidential election, Taiwan might not be able to count on the U.S. as much as it has in the past. Trump has often put America’s interests first, which China believes could leave Taiwan in a vulnerable position.
Currently, Trump is competing closely with Vice President Kamala Harris in the race. Recently, he has said that Taiwan, which China claims as its own, should pay for U.S. protection and accused Taiwan of taking U.S. business, especially in the semiconductor sector.
When asked about these statements, China’s Taiwan Affairs Office commented that people in Taiwan likely understand the U.S. focuses on its own interests. Zhu Fenglian, a spokesperson from the office, said that "America First" could mean Taiwan might go from being a strategic partner to a “discarded child.” Zhu avoided mentioning Trump by name but highlighted Taiwan’s awareness of U.S. intentions.
The United States has laws requiring it to help Taiwan defend itself even though they don’t have official diplomatic relations. Trump recently repeated his claim that Taiwan needs to pay for its defense and accused it of “stealing” U.S. semiconductor business in an interview on The Joe Rogan Experience podcast.
Taiwan’s Economy Minister Kuo Jyh-huei responded cautiously, saying he hopes for a fair election in the U.S. but would not comment directly due to the campaign.
Taiwan remembers the strong support Trump showed it during his time as president from 2017 to 2021, including U.S. arms sales that have continued under President Joe Biden’s administration. Taiwan’s government, which is democratically elected, strongly rejects China’s claim over it, stating that only Taiwan’s people can decide the island’s future.
