China’s Shenzhou-19 Mission to Launch: Three Astronauts Headed to Space Station for Key Experiments

China launches Shenzhou-19 mission, sending three astronauts, including Wang Haoze, to Tiangong Space Station for scientific research and experiments

On Wednesday, China will send three astronauts into low-Earth orbit for its 14th crewed mission to space. The astronauts will head to the Tiangong Space Station—also known as the “Celestial Palace”—to conduct dozens of science experiments.

Of China’s 14 manned space missions, eight have visited the Tiangong Space Station, which China built independently.

The Shenzhou-19 mission will be led by Cai Xuzhe, who was also part of the Shenzhou-14 mission in June 2022. He will be joined by Song Lingdong and Wang Haoze, two astronauts born in the 1990s who will be on their first mission. Wang Haoze is notable as China’s only female spaceflight engineer currently active and will be the third female astronaut China has sent into space.

A Quick Look at China’s Crewed Space Missions So Far:

China first sent an astronaut to space in 2003 on the Shenzhou-5 mission. Since then, China has continued to advance its space program, sending crews on several missions and welcoming both male and female astronauts into space. Here are some of China’s major missions:
