Cyclone Dana Hits Odisha Coast, Bringing Heavy Rain and Strong Winds

Cyclone Dana made landfall on Odisha’s coast early Thursday, sweeping through with strong winds and heavy rainfall. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the cyclone hit between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra around 12:10 a.m., causing intense weather conditions in coastal areas like Kendrapara and Bhadrak.

What to Expect as the Cyclone Weakens

IMD officials have reported that Dana's landfall process could continue until Friday morning. While the storm weakens, it’s expected to shift its path toward Dhenkanal and Angul instead of Keonjhar. During the height of the landfall, winds could reach speeds up to 120 km/h, making conditions dangerous for many areas along the coast.

Odisha Prepares and Responds to Cyclone Dana

Odisha's Chief Minister, Mohan Charan Majhi, shared that both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah checked in on the state’s preparedness. Approximately 584,000 people have been safely evacuated from low-lying areas where the cyclone could have severe impacts. Though initially, the state planned to evacuate up to one million people, officials adjusted this figure as Dana was slightly weaker than first anticipated.

Heavy Rainfall Expected to Continue

The IMD predicts very heavy rainfall—between 7 to 20 cm—in districts including Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapada, Bhadrak, and Mayurbhanj. Some areas could even receive extreme rainfall of more than 20 cm. From Friday to Saturday morning, more rain and strong winds are expected in parts of Jajpur, Bhadrak, Puri, Dhenkanal, and other nearby areas.

Restoration Efforts Underway

After the storm passed through, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) teams quickly started working to clear uprooted trees in Dhamra. Many villagers in Dhamra, Bhadrak, and surrounding areas reported heavy rain and rough seas during the cyclone.

With restoration efforts already in motion, authorities are committed to helping communities recover quickly.
