Delhi High Court Seeks Centre's Response on Stopping Illegal Resale of Concert Tickets

On Thursday, the Delhi High Court asked the Centre to respond to a petition that calls for better rules to stop the illegal resale of concert tickets. The goal is to make sure tickets are sold only through official platforms and block websites that are selling tickets illegally.

A bench led by Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela has asked for replies from the Union Ministries of Information and Broadcasting, Electronics, and Information Technology, as well as companies like Stubhub, Viagogo, and Bigtree Entertainment (which owns BookMyShow). The court has given them four weeks to respond and set the next hearing for February 18, 2025.

The petition, brought by Samridhi and four others, highlights a major issue: illegal reselling of tickets for big events like concerts and sports matches. A recent example is the upcoming Coldplay concert in India, which has seen tickets being resold at very high prices on unauthorized platforms.

The Problem with Illegal Ticket Resales:

According to the petition, events like Coldplay’s concert and others (such as Diljit Dosanjh's shows) see tickets being snatched up by "ticket bots" — automated systems that buy large quantities of tickets, which are then sold at ridiculously high prices. This hurts real fans, who are forced to pay way more than the actual ticket price.

The petition says BookMyShow (BMS), which has partnered with Coldplay for their ticket sales, needs to do more to stop these bots and protect the ticket-buying process. BMS should be making sure that tickets are sold fairly, and preventing this illegal reselling.

What the Petition Asks For:

The petition urges the court to make the Centre block these illegal reselling websites and to stop the resale of concert tickets in an unfair way. It also asks for the creation of a committee to investigate this issue, as it’s not just happening with concerts like Coldplay, but also with other events, like Diljit Dosanjh’s upcoming "Dil-Luminati Tour" in Delhi.

In a similar earlier case, the Delhi High Court had asked for the Centre and the Delhi government’s response on the issue of "ticket scalping" — where tickets are resold at sky-high prices. This practice makes it hard for regular people to attend events without paying extra
