Election Commission Dismisses Congress Claims of Haryana Poll Irregularities, Calls Allegations “Baseless”
The Election Commission of India (ECI) has dismissed allegations made by the Congress about irregularities in the recent Haryana assembly elections, labeling them “baseless and unfounded.” The ECI issued a warning to the Congress party, urging it to avoid making such claims repeatedly without evidence.
In a letter addressed to Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, the ECI explained that their “baseless claims” risk undermining confidence in the Indian electoral system. This warning follows several complaints by Congress, which included concerns about delays in vote counting on October 8 and a suspicious 99% battery level displayed on Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in some polling stations in 26 assembly constituencies.
The ECI emphasized that Congress’s pattern of making claims “without any evidence” and amplifying concerns on or near polling days could “fuel tension” in the already high-stakes electoral environment.
Referring to incidents over the past year, the ECI expressed frustration at what it described as a trend of Congress “casting unfounded doubts” on the voting process. It also noted that Congress often publicized their complaints widely before even informing the ECI formally, particularly during critical polling or counting periods.
The ECI emphasized that political parties, especially major national ones like Congress, play a vital role in sustaining democratic integrity. It urged the party to rely on facts before making claims, assuring that it remains committed to addressing legitimate grievances.
In response, the ECI restated its commitment to ensuring a fair and transparent voting process, reaffirming its dedication to democracy by addressing credible complaints and upholding the electoral process.
