Glenn Phillips Explains His Epic Celebration After Taking Virat Kohli’s Wicket: ‘The Tension Had Built Up’

New Zealand’s Glenn Phillips described taking Virat Kohli's wicket as one of the "biggest" moments of his career. Phillips' stunning dismissal of Kohli came during a thrilling Test match, marking a historic win for New Zealand in India after 36 long years.

In the first Test in Bengaluru, New Zealand pulled off an incredible victory against Rohit Sharma's India, despite being bowled out for just 46 runs in their first innings. Chasing 107 in the final innings, New Zealand triumphed by eight wickets. However, the biggest turning point came on Day 3, when Virat Kohli lost his wicket to Phillips on the last ball of the day.

Kohli was in fine form, scoring a solid 70 runs and putting India in a strong position for a potential comeback win. But just as the day was ending, Phillips, bowling off-spin, found the edge of Kohli’s bat. Despite opting for a review, Kohli had to walk off, giving New Zealand a critical advantage heading into the next day.

Phillips called the wicket of Kohli "one of the biggest" of his career. "He’s probably one of the biggest wickets in Test cricket right now," Phillips said in an interview with New Zealand Cricket. "To get him out on the last ball of the day, after he’d built such a good partnership, was an incredible moment. The tension had really built up by then."

Phillips' Wild Celebration Explained

Phillips’ celebration after dismissing Kohli was intense, and he explained why. "That was pure elation. It’s probably the biggest wicket I’ve taken so far, and the celebration was just a release of all that tension and excitement. It was a huge moment," he said.

A Historic Win for New Zealand

This win was particularly special for New Zealand, as it was their first Test victory in India in 36 years. Phillips expressed how much this victory meant to the team. "It’s phenomenal. Many New Zealand teams have tried to win here before, but unfortunately, they came up short. To finally get this win, after so long, is truly special," Phillips said.

With this victory, New Zealand now leads the three-match series 1-0. The second Test will begin on October 24 in Pune, and Phillips said the team is focused on keeping their momentum going.

"Coming off such a big win, it’s important for us to reset and stick to our processes. We want to hit the ground running in Pune and hopefully build on this success," Phillips added.

New Zealand’s win was a landmark moment, and Phillips’ incredible wicket of Virat Kohli was a key highlight that will be remembered for a long time.
