BJP's Himanta Biswa Sarma, overseeing the party's campaign for the upcoming Jharkhand assembly elections, alleged on Monday that an increase in Jharkhand’s Muslim population could be due to "infiltration." Sarma voiced his concern about the Muslim population rising and the tribal population declining, particularly in Santhal Pargana.
Comparing his stance against infiltrators to the legendary act of Lord Hanuman setting Lanka ablaze, Sarma stated, "We must ignite a fire against infiltrators to make Jharkhand a golden land." He further speculated that if families aren’t having large numbers of children, then population growth might mean people are migrating from other regions.
He also pointed to a recent letter from the Jharkhand government mentioning alleged training for intruders at madrasas and the easy availability of Aadhaar cards for them. Sarma pledged that if the BJP wins the elections, they will bring in the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Santhal Pargana to counter infiltration.
Jharkhand’s two-phase election will take place on November 13 and 20. In the last elections, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha won 30 seats, the BJP secured 25, and Congress won 16.
