India Says BRICS is Very Important Before Big Summit

India has said it values its role in BRICS, an important international group, and that its efforts have helped the group in areas like economic growth and global cooperation. This statement came from Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, just one day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the Russian city of Kazan for the 16th BRICS Summit.

Misri said that India’s contributions to BRICS are key to its success, especially in areas like sustainable development and global reforms. He also said BRICS helps the world handle big challenges and works to create a fairer and more open international system.

What’s Happening at the Summit?

This will be the first BRICS summit since the group expanded last year. The summit will start on Tuesday, and the main discussions will happen on Wednesday. The leaders are expected to agree on the "Kazan Declaration," which will guide BRICS’ future plans.

Prime Minister Modi is also going to meet several leaders from BRICS countries, including Russian President Vladimir Putin. They are expected to talk about the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

In earlier talks with Ukraine’s President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Modi had said that both Russia and Ukraine should sit down to talk and end the war, and that India is ready to help bring peace.

What is BRICS?

BRICS is an international group that started in 2006 after leaders from Russia, India, and China met in St. Petersburg. In 2010, South Africa joined, and the group became known as BRICS. It was expanded again last year to include more countries.
