A new survey hints that Indian-Americans, one of the largest and most influential immigrant groups in the U.S., are showing a slight decrease in their support for the Democratic Party. While most Indian-Americans still identify with the Democrats, more are now open to voting for Republican candidates, including former President Donald Trump, according to the "2024 Indian-American Attitudes" survey by the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace and YouGov.
The survey, which polled 714 Indian-American citizens from September 18 to October 15, has a margin of error of 3.7 percent. Results show 61% of respondents plan to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris, while 32% plan to vote for Trump. This marks a slight increase in Trump support since 2020. A deeper look shows that 67% of Indian-American women back Harris, compared to 53% of men, who are more divided—39% say they would vote for Trump.
Indian-Americans are the second-largest immigrant group in the U.S., with over 5.2 million people. Many are considered “high propensity” voters, with 96% saying they plan to vote this November. Indian-Americans’ rising numbers, financial success, and influence in close races make them a group that both Democrats and Republicans are keen to win over.
Abortion and reproductive rights are top issues for Indian-Americans this year, ranking as their second-most-important concern after inflation, jobs, and the economy. The survey also highlighted that while many Indian-Americans do not favor Republican policies, they are drawn by the GOP’s focus on the economy.
While many Indian-Americans hold negative views of well-known Republicans like Nikki Haley and Vivek Ramaswamy, the data shows a shift may be happening. Asian-Americans, including Indian-Americans, are showing slight movement toward the Republican Party, a trend that has also been noted in other minority groups.
In the upcoming election, both parties are working hard to gain support from this community, especially as Kamala Harris, whose mother was Indian, will be on the ballot, making her a point of pride for many Indian-American voters.
