Indian Envoy Sanjay Verma Slams Canada, Calls 'Person of Interest' Label a 'Back-Stab'

Senior Indian diplomat Sanjay Verma has spoken out against Canada for labeling him a "person of interest" in the murder of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. In an interview on Thursday, Verma called Canada’s move a form of "back-stabbing." He also accused the country of giving shelter to Khalistani terrorists and extremists.

This diplomatic dispute between India and Canada has escalated, with India pulling out its top diplomats, including Verma, from Canada. In response, India also expelled six Canadian diplomats.

Shock and Betrayal

"Being declared a 'person of interest' by Canada was shocking—it felt like a back-stab," Verma told PTI. He said Canada’s actions were the lowest point in their bilateral relationship, describing the situation as “the pits.” According to Verma, the lenient Canadian legal system has allowed Khalistani terrorists and extremists to find a safe haven there.

Verma also highlighted that the Khalistani supporters in Canada are involved in illegal activities like human trafficking, gun smuggling, and extortion. However, he pointed out that only a small group, about 10,000 Sikhs in Canada, are hardcore Khalistanis, turning the idea of Khalistan into a "business."

The Diplomatic Incident

Verma recounted how the Canadian government had asked him to give up his diplomatic immunity while he was visiting Toronto. He explained that Canadian officials wanted him and five other diplomats to be questioned by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) in connection with Nijjar’s murder. “I sent that message back to India for further instructions,” he said.

The Murder Allegations

Canada has accused Indian agents of being involved in the 2023 murder of Nijjar, a charge India has strongly denied, calling it "absurd and motivated." India insists that Canada has not provided any real evidence to back up its claims.

Earlier this month, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau admitted that his government had only shared intelligence with India regarding the case, not solid proof.
