On Sunday, Iran called for an urgent United Nations Security Council meeting to address what it calls “aggression” by Israel. Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi, sent a letter to both the UN Secretary-General and the head of the Security Council, demanding that the Council condemn Israel's recent air strikes.
These strikes, conducted on Saturday, targeted military locations in Iran and were reportedly in response to an Iranian attack on October 1st, itself a reaction to the killing of Iran-supported militant leaders and a high-ranking commander of the Revolutionary Guards.
Araghchi’s letter claimed that while most of the missiles were intercepted, some managed to reach their targets, causing damage and leading to the deaths of four Iranian soldiers. He described the attack as a “clear violation of Iran’s sovereignty” and stated that Iran has the “inherent right” to respond to this assault.
Israel’s military reported that it targeted Iranian missile factories, installations, and various defense systems across multiple areas, also warning Iran not to retaliate. Iran, however, has downplayed the strike, stating that it resulted in "limited damage" to a few radar systems and was dismissed by Iranian media as “weak,” suggesting that Iran may be aiming to avoid further escalation.
