"Iran's Ayatollah Khamenei Responds to Israeli Attack, Calls for Measured Reactions but Strong Deterrence"
Iran’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, spoke out on Sunday following Israel’s recent attack on Iranian military targets. He said the incident shouldn't be “exaggerated nor downplayed” but warned that Israel’s “miscalculations must be corrected.” He stressed that Iran reserves the right to respond to the attack but advised that any actions should be carefully planned to show Iran’s strength.
“These actions by Israel should neither be overhyped nor ignored,” Khamenei stated, adding that it’s important for Israel to “understand the will and power of the Iranian people.” He encouraged Iran's leaders to respond in a way that reflects the nation's strength and benefits Iran’s people.
Israel launched an overnight airstrike on Iranian missile factories and other targets, sending multiple waves of jets across the country in the early hours. The Iranian government reported minor damage and the loss of four soldiers. Following the attack, Iran responded with a message that it would defend itself if provoked again.
Both the U.S. and Europe have advised Iran and Israel to avoid further escalations, with U.S. President Joe Biden expressing hope that the strike was the “end of it.” He noted that it appears Israel targeted only military sites.
Iran also voiced its desire for peace in the region, stating its current priority is to bring about a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon. The Iranian government added that while it retains the right to respond, it is focused on securing lasting peace in Gaza and Lebanon as violence continues there.
The Israeli strike follows a recent missile attack from Iran, with around 200 missiles directed toward Israel. This was only the second time Iran has launched a direct assault on Israel, deepening tensions in a region already strained by ongoing conflicts. Since October 7, 2023, Israel has been in intense conflicts with Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon, with significant casualties on both sides.
