Jailed Gangster Lawrence Bishnoi Invited to Contest Maharashtra Elections: 'We See Bhagat Singh in You'
Lawrence Bishnoi, a notorious gangster currently behind bars, has been asked to run in the upcoming Maharashtra Assembly elections by a lesser-known political party, the Uttar Bharatiya Vikas Sena (UBVS).
In a surprising letter that has gone viral, UBVS leader Sunil Shukla invited Bishnoi to be one of their candidates. Shukla even compared Bishnoi to the legendary freedom fighter Bhagat Singh, saying, "We see Shaheed Bhagat Singh in you."
The UBVS party, which claims to fight for the rights of North Indian communities in Maharashtra, said they have already chosen four candidates and are ready to announce 50 more if Bishnoi accepts their offer. The party focuses on helping migrants from North Indian states like Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Haryana, and Bihar, who, according to them, are denied benefits in Maharashtra because of their roots.
Bishnoi, who is currently in a Gujarat prison, gained fame for his alleged involvement in high-profile crimes, including the 2022 murder of popular singer-politician Sidhu Moosewala. He has also been linked to threats against Bollywood actor Salman Khan. Bishnoi made headlines in 2018 when his associate was caught planning an attack on Khan, and again in 2023 when gunshots were fired outside the actor’s home, which police connected to Bishnoi’s gang.
Shukla’s invitation has raised eyebrows, as Bishnoi’s criminal background and ties to controversial groups make him a figure of national attention. The UBVS, however, seems determined to support him, claiming his leadership could fight for the rights of North Indians in Maharashtra.
