As the Jharkhand Assembly elections approach, the Congress party is taking a strong stance. After releasing its first list of candidates, Congress said it does not want friendly fights with its allies, the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) and the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD). Congress believes that competing against each other in some areas could hurt their chances of winning against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
On Monday evening, Congress announced its first list of 21 candidates. The party plans to contest 30 seats, while JMM will run in 42 seats. They are part of the INDIA alliance, which includes JMM, Congress, RJD, and the CPI(ML).
However, talks about sharing seats have hit a snag. The RJD wants 12-13 seats, while Congress has only offered them 5-6 seats. The RJD has even threatened to go solo if they don't get what they want.
“Seat-sharing never makes anyone happy. But to win together, everyone must make sacrifices and accept some losses. The main goal is to defeat the BJP,” said Ghulam Ahmad Mir, a Congress leader overseeing the Jharkhand elections.
In the last Assembly elections in 2019, JMM won 30 out of 81 seats, Congress got 10, and RJD won just 1 out of 7 seats. This time, Congress is hesitant to give more seats to the RJD.
Mir pointed out, “The RJD won only one seat last time, with a winning rate of just 16%. In comparison, JMM had a winning rate of 74% and Congress 55%. If the RJD takes more seats but wins less, we are giving easy chances to the opposition.”
With the CPI(ML) joining the alliance, adjustments in seat-sharing are necessary. The elections in Jharkhand are set for November 13 and 20, and results will be announced on November 23.
