Justice Sanjiv Khanna to Be India’s 51st Chief Justice, Oath Ceremony on November 11

Justice Sanjiv Khanna has been appointed as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) and will officially take his oath on November 11, 2024. He will succeed the current Chief Justice, DY Chandrachud, who retires on November 10. Justice Chandrachud has held the position since November 8, 2022.

The announcement was made by Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal on social media platform X. He wrote, “In exercise of the power conferred by the Constitution of India, Hon'ble President, after consultation with Hon'ble Chief Justice of India, is pleased to appoint Shri Justice Sanjiv Khanna, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, as Chief Justice of India with effect from 11th November 2024.”

Justice Khanna’s Tenure

Justice Khanna will serve as CJI for a little over six months, retiring on May 13, 2025. Earlier this month, the current CJI, DY Chandrachud, recommended Justice Khanna as his successor, since he is the second-most senior judge in the Supreme Court.

Who Is Justice Sanjiv Khanna?

Justice Sanjiv Khanna began his legal journey in 1983. He initially worked at the district courts in the Tis Hazari complex, later moving on to the Delhi High Court and various tribunals. He became Senior Standing Counsel for the Income Tax Department and, in 2004, was appointed Standing Counsel (Civil) for the National Capital Territory of Delhi.

Justice Khanna has served as an Additional Public Prosecutor and was an amicus curiae (court-appointed advisor) in several criminal cases at the Delhi High Court. He was appointed as an additional judge of the Delhi High Court in 2005, becoming a permanent judge in 2006. On January 18, 2019, he was elevated to a judge of the Supreme Court.
