Karnataka High Court Grants Actor Darshan Thoogudeepa Six-Week Bail for Urgent Surgery in Renukaswamy Murder Case

Karnataka High Court grants actor Darshan Thoogudeepa six-week bail for urgent surgery. He is accused in the Renukaswamy murder case; full details inside.

The Karnataka High Court has granted Kannada actor Darshan Thoogudeepa interim bail for six weeks so he can undergo surgery. Darshan, currently jailed in the Renukaswamy murder case, received this temporary bail after Judge S. Vishwajith Shetty reviewed his medical condition. Darshan’s legal team, led by senior lawyer CV Nagesh, argued that he needs the operation due to severe numbness in his feet.

The court initially reserved its decision on Tuesday, awaiting input from state prosecutor P. Prasanna Kumar and medical reports provided in a sealed file from doctors at Ballari Central Prison and a Ballari government neurology expert.

Health Condition and Legal Battle

Darshan’s lawyer asked for permission to perform the surgery in a private hospital in Mysuru, with Darshan covering the costs. The prosecutor argued that the documents did not clarify how long he would need to stay in the hospital, suggesting treatment could be provided in a government hospital instead. The court noted Supreme Court rulings that allow undertrial defendants the choice of medical facilities but requested a Bengaluru doctor’s assessment to verify the urgency and time needed for recovery.

Earlier, a lower court denied Darshan’s bail application on September 21, leading him to petition the high court for interim bail for medical care.

Background on the Renukaswamy Murder Case

Police claim that 33-year-old Renukaswamy, a fan of Darshan, sent inappropriate messages to Pavithra Gowda, a friend of Darshan's and co-accused. This reportedly angered Darshan, allegedly leading to Renukaswamy’s murder. Renukaswamy’s body was found near a stormwater drain in Sumanahalli on June 9. Raghavendra, a member of Darshan's fan club in Chitradurga, allegedly brought Renukaswamy to a shed in Bengaluru’s R.R. Nagar on the pretext of meeting Darshan. Here, he was allegedly tortured and killed.

A post-mortem revealed that Renukaswamy died from shock and hemorrhage caused by multiple blunt injuries. Pavithra, accused as the main instigator, is alleged to have provoked others involved in the crime and played a significant role in the plot.
