In Karnataka's Vijayapura district, a recent issue concerning farmers' lands mistakenly marked as Waqf properties will soon be resolved. On Monday, Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister H K Patil addressed the situation, confirming that notices mistakenly labeling farmers' lands as Waqf property will be withdrawn. Patil emphasized that the government has no intention of converting these lands into Waqf property and promised action against those responsible for this error.
Minister Patil stated that Vijayapura’s Deputy Commissioner is conducting an investigation to understand how this error occurred. "The notices will be withdrawn," Patil assured, noting that it may take a couple of days to complete the retraction process. “The land belongs to the farmers, and the mistake will be corrected,” he added.
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya had recently met with affected farmers from Vijayapura and criticized the Congress government over the incident. Responding to this, Industries Minister M B Patil clarified that out of the 1,200 acres in Honavada of Tikota taluk, only 11 acres are actually Waqf property. He attributed the misunderstanding to a notification error and confirmed that a task force, led by the Deputy Commissioner, would handle any further issues.
Minister Patil noted that M B Patil’s clarification should resolve the controversy, but remarked that if BJP seeks to politicize the issue, it would be unfair. Responding to calls for the resignation of Waqf Minister B Z Zameer Ahmed Khan, H K Patil argued that the mistake was made by local officials, not by senior ministers. “It’s not fair to demand resignations over a mistake made by a village accountant or tahsildar,” he added.
