Khalistani Attack Shocks Indian Envoy in Canada: “Sword Came Inches from Me”

India’s former high commissioner to Canada, Sanjay Verma, recently shared a terrifying account of an attack by Khalistani extremists in Alberta. The incident happened while he was with his wife at an event with the Indian community in Canada. In an interview with ANI, Verma detailed how close he came to being seriously injured.

Close Call with a Sword

Describing the incident, Verma said, “A couple of times they came dangerously close to harming us... They were carrying a sword, not a religious kirpan, but a real sword.” He explained that at one point, the blade was just 2-2.5 inches from his body, a distance so close that he feared for his life. “My wife was with me as well, which made it even more frightening,” he added.

What Happened That Night

The attack took place at a business and cultural event where Verma was supposed to meet with Indian businesspeople in Canada to strengthen ties. Outside the event hall, around 150 Khalistani protestors had gathered. Verma explained, “They surrounded the entrance and began to shout and cause chaos in the name of Khalistan.” Local police and the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) were present, but the situation quickly turned hostile as the mob blocked Verma’s path.

Understanding the Difference Between a Sword and a Kirpan

Verma emphasized that the weapon used was not a kirpan, a ceremonial blade carried by Sikhs as a symbol of their faith, but an actual sword. He noted, “Those of us who understand Sikhism and respect it know the difference. This was not a religious item—it was a weapon.” Following the incident, Canadian police intervened, pushing back the mob, and launched an investigation, though Verma was not informed about the outcome.

Rising Tensions Between India and Canada

The incident reflects rising tensions between India and Canada. Verma was recalled after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau alleged that Indian officials had a role in the death of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a designated terrorist in India, killed outside a Surrey gurdwara last year. India denied these claims, calling them “baseless” and saying that Canada has allowed extremist, anti-India activities to flourish within its borders.

The growing strain led to a diplomatic standoff, with India expelling Canadian diplomats in response to what it called the “targeting” of Indian officials in Canada. Despite these challenges, Verma’s main hope is to restore peaceful relations between the two countries.

Khalistani Extremists Threaten Peace-Loving Indo-Canadians

Verma expressed concern for Indo-Canadians, noting that Khalistani groups have threatened peaceful communities and even vandalized places of worship. The Canadian government has been urged to take strong steps to ensure the safety of Indian diplomats and citizens.

For now, Verma’s experience serves as a stark reminder of the threats faced by Indian officials and the need for international cooperation to bring stability to the community.
