Maharashtra Elections: BJP and Congress Drop Most Sitting MLAs as Parties Gear Up for November Polls
With nominations now closed for Maharashtra’s assembly elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress have dropped the most sitting MLAs among the major political parties, sparking shifts and surprises.
The BJP has decided not to give tickets to eight current MLAs, while Congress has replaced five of its members. Ajit Pawar's Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and Sharad Pawar’s NCP faction both chose to exclude two MLAs each. In a notable exception, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena has re-nominated almost all members who supported him during a previous rebellion, except for one.
Voting for Maharashtra’s 288 seats will take place on November 20, with results to be counted on November 23. The exact candidates of each ruling and opposition coalition are yet to be fully confirmed as some seats have multiple nominees from the same party, creating competition within alliances.
Among BJP’s more unexpected moves, it replaced sitting MLA Sunil Rane from Borivali in Mumbai with Sanjay Upadhyay. Other replaced MLAs include Sandeep Dhurve from Arni, who is now succeeded by Raju Todsam, and Namdev Sasane from Umarkhed, replaced by Kisan Wankhede. In Nagpur Central, Vikas Kumbhare was substituted with Praveen Datke, a sitting MLC and former assistant to BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Similarly, Ashwini Jagtap from Chinchwad is replaced by her brother-in-law, Shankar Jagtap.
Congress has also dropped five sitting MLAs. Hemant Ogale will now contest from Shrirampur instead of Lahu Kanade, and former Zilla Parishad officer Rajkumar Puram will run from Amgaon, taking over from Sahasram Korote. Notably, Shirish Chaudhary has been replaced by his son, Dhananjay, in Raver.
Further reshuffling occurred as Congress did not renew seats for Sulabha Khodke and Hiraman Khoskar, previously from Amravati and Igatpuri, respectively. Both candidates, following anti-party allegations, are now nominated by Ajit Pawar’s NCP.
In NCP's own lineup, former Home Minister Anil Deshmukh has been succeeded by his son Salil Deshmukh in Katol, and Abhijeet Patil was chosen for Madha over sitting MLA Babanrao Shinde. Meanwhile, Ajit Pawar’s NCP faction replaced MLAs Manohar Chandrikapure from Arjuni Morgaon and Balasaheb Ajabe from Ashti with former BJP minister Rajkumar Badole and Suresh Dhas, respectively.
Lastly, Shinde’s Shiv Sena removed only one MLA, Shrinivas Vanga from Palghar, and replaced him with former MP Rajendra Gavit.
