In a surprising move for the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde’s Shiv Sena has nominated Milind Deora, a Rajya Sabha MP and former Congress leader, to compete against Aaditya Thackeray, son of ex-CM Uddhav Thackeray. This high-stakes race for the Worli constituency is expected to be a major highlight of the elections.
Deora, who joined the Sena from Congress earlier this year and became a Rajya Sabha member, will face Aaditya, the sitting MLA and a prominent face in Shiv Sena (UBT).
In other notable picks, the Shiv Sena also nominated Nilesh Rane, son of BJP’s Narayan Rane, for the Kudal seat, while his brother Nitesh Rane is set to run from Kankavali as a BJP candidate. Bhawana Gawali, a former MP, has been chosen for the Risod seat, and MLC Amshya Padvi will contest from Akkalkuva in Dhule.
In Mumbai, former MP Sanjay Nirupam will compete for the Dindoshi seat, while ex-BJP leader Murji Patel is nominated for Andheri East. Additionally, former BJP MP Rajendra Gavit, who won the Palghar Lok Sabha seat in 2019, is contesting from Palghar.
The elections for Maharashtra's 288-seat assembly will take place on November 20, with the vote counting set for November 23.
