Opposition Leaders Stage Walkout Over Delhi Waqf Board Presentation Changes at Key Parliament Panel Meeting
On Monday, several opposition leaders walked out of a meeting held by the Joint Parliamentary Committee on the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The walkout was a protest against changes made in a presentation by the Delhi Waqf Board, allegedly without informing the Delhi government.
The walkout included leaders like AAP’s Sanjay Singh, DMK’s Mohammed Abdulla, and Congress members Naseer Hussain and Mohamed Jawed. The leaders claimed that Ashwini Kumar, the administrator of the Delhi Waqf Board and MCD Commissioner, altered the report of the Delhi Waqf Board without seeking approval from Delhi Chief Minister Atishi.
The meeting, chaired by BJP MP Jagdambika Pal, had representatives from various Waqf Boards, including those from Delhi, Haryana, Punjab, and Uttarakhand, to discuss the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024. The committee also invited groups like Call for Justice, Waqf Tenant Welfare Association, and B.K. Dutt Colony's Residents Welfare Association to share their perspectives and suggestions on the bill.
In the previous JPC meeting on October 22, tensions ran high as a heated argument erupted between BJP MP Abhijit Gangopadhyay and TMC MP Kalyan Banerjee. During the clash, Banerjee allegedly threw a glass bottle, injuring himself in the process. Due to the incident, the TMC MP was suspended from attending the next committee meeting.
The proposed Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, aims to bring major reforms, including digitizing records, enforcing strict audits, and creating legal tools to reclaim illegally occupied Waqf properties.
