Planet Could Warm by 3.1°C Unless We Act Now, Warns UN Report

A new United Nations report warns that our current climate policies will lead to a global temperature increase of over 3 degrees Celsius (5.4°F) by the year 2100. That’s more than twice the 1.5°C (2.7°F) limit that world leaders agreed to back in 2015 as part of the Paris Agreement.

This rise in temperature could bring severe impacts like stronger storms, rising sea levels, and more extreme heatwaves.

Big Warming Ahead Without Action

The UN’s annual Emissions Gap Report shows that unless governments do more to cut down on harmful emissions, the world could warm by as much as 3.1°C (5.6°F) by the end of this century. The world has already warmed by about 1.3°C (2.3°F), and greenhouse gas emissions are still increasing.

A Planetary Warning

"We’re walking a tightrope with our planet," said UN Secretary-General António Guterres. "We either close the gap on emissions, or we fall into climate disaster."

The report showed that between 2022 and 2023, global greenhouse gas emissions hit a record high of 57.1 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide. Even with the current promises from governments, global temperatures are still expected to rise by around 2.6°C to 2.8°C (4.7°F to 5°F) by 2100.

G20 Nations Falling Short

Most of the world's top economies, including the G20 countries, have not made enough progress toward reducing emissions by 2030. That’s when major cuts need to happen. To avoid disaster, the report says countries need to cut emissions by 42% by 2030 and by 57% by 2035.

What's Next?

World leaders will meet in Azerbaijan next month for the annual UN climate summit, COP29. They’ll be discussing ways to speed up the shift away from fossil fuels and update their climate action plans, which are due in 2025.

Time to Act

Inger Andersen, head of the UN Environment Programme, urged world leaders to use the summit as a chance to do more. "Every fraction of a degree we can avoid matters," she said, highlighting that every bit of progress counts when it comes to fighting climate change.
