PM Modi Meets China's Xi Jinping for First Time in 5 Years at BRICS Summit, tells Xi Jinping: 'Maintaining peace, stability on border priority'

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Wednesday during the BRICS Summit in Russia. This meeting is significant because it's the first time the two leaders have had a one-on-one discussion in five years.

PM Modi tells Xi Jinping: 'Maintaining peace, stability on border priority'

Their last formal meeting took place in Mamallapuram in October 2019, just before tensions flared between India and China over the border dispute in eastern Ladakh. This recent meeting comes after India and China reached an agreement on how to patrol their shared border, known as the Line of Actual Control (LAC). The deal is the result of many rounds of talks between their military and diplomats.

Important Meetings Leading to This Moment

In recent months, top leaders from both sides have been in touch. Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met his Chinese counterpart, Wang Yi, in July, during two different international meetings. Also, India’s National Security Advisor, Ajit Doval, met with Wang Yi in September at a BRICS-related event. These conversations helped set the stage for the Modi-Xi meeting.

PM Modi's Message: Dialogue, Not War

Before his meeting with Xi, Prime Minister Modi addressed the BRICS Summit in Kazan. He used this opportunity to call for peace, especially regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict.

"We believe in solving issues through dialogue and diplomacy, not war," Modi said. He reminded the world that, just as countries worked together to fight COVID-19, they could also come together to create a safe and prosperous future for the next generation.

Modi also highlighted the importance of working together on issues like cyber security and artificial intelligence (AI). He urged BRICS nations to unite against terrorism and terror financing.

"We must stand together to fight terrorism. There’s no room for double standards. We need to take strong action to prevent the youth from being radicalized," Modi said. He also pushed for progress on the Comprehensive Convention on International Terrorism at the United Nations.
