In his recent Mann Ki Baat radio address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi warned everyone about the dangers of a new scam called the "digital arrest" fraud. He explained that scammers pretend to be officials from the police, CBI, RBI, or narcotics departments, creating fear to trick people into giving up personal information or money.
Prime Minister Modi broke down the method of these scammers in three steps:
- Gathering Personal Info: The scammers first collect personal details to sound legitimate.
- Creating Fear: They then intimidate the person, making them feel they’re in serious trouble.
- Rushing for Action: Finally, they use time pressure, forcing the victim to act quickly, often causing people to lose large amounts of money.
PM Modi assured that no real government agency would demand money or threaten anyone over the phone. He advised everyone to remember three security steps: Stop, Think, and Take Action. If anyone receives such a call, they should stay calm, record or screenshot the interaction if possible, and immediately report it to the national cyber helpline at 1930 or contact the local police.
This digital arrest scam has been spreading in India, with several people falling victim. Recently, Vardhman Group chairman SP Oswal was tricked into transferring ₹7 crore after cybercriminals held him under "digital surveillance" for two days. The criminals pretended to be CBI officials and even impersonated the Chief Justice of India through a fake Skype call to make him feel he was under legal investigation.
Prime Minister Modi urged everyone to spread awareness about these scams, helping prevent others from falling into these traps.
