Race to Maharashtra Elections: Last-Minute Decisions on Candidate Seats Fuel Tension

With just hours left for nominations, BJP and MVA are finalizing candidates for Maharashtra’s November 20 polls. Last-minute seat allocations add tension in both alliances

With just hours left before nominations close for the Maharashtra Assembly elections set for November 20, there's still a lot of uncertainty about who will be running in key seats across the state's major political alliances.

Mahayuti Alliance (BJP, Shiv Sena, NCP-Ajit Pawar)
The BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP (Ajit Pawar) alliance, known as Mahayuti, is still finalizing candidates for a few crucial seats. Initially, seven seats were in question, but this was reduced to five after NCP (Ajit Pawar) announced candidates for two seats on Wednesday morning.

So far, the BJP has confirmed candidates for 146 seats and allocated 4 seats to smaller allies, including the Yuva Swabhiman Party, Rashtriya Samaj Paksha, Republican Party of India (Athavale), and Jan Surajya Shakti Paksha. However, two BJP candidates were surprisingly included in the Shiv Sena (Shinde)'s list: Shaina NC for the Mumbadevi seat and Amol Khatal for Sangamner.

Out of the 138 seats reserved for Shiv Sena (Shinde) and NCP (Ajit Pawar), Shiv Sena has announced candidates for 80 seats and left one seat each for smaller allies Jan Suraj Party and Rajashri Shahuprakash Aghadi. The NCP (Ajit Pawar) has announced candidates for 53 seats.

Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) - Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar)
The MVA, formed by the Congress, Shiv Sena (UBT), and NCP (Sharad Pawar), is facing its own challenges. They still haven’t agreed on 16 seats due to internal disagreements. So far, the MVA has announced 262 candidates across its three main parties. The Congress declared candidates for 103 seats, Shiv Sena (UBT) for 87 seats, and NCP (Sharad Pawar) for 82 seats.

A key factor here is the smaller parties allied with the MVA, such as the Samajwadi Party led by Akhilesh Yadav, which have yet to announce their candidates. With both alliances locked in fierce competition for voter support, the coming days will be crucial for finalizing their strategies.

This ongoing tug-of-war over seats comes just months after similar issues arose during the Lok Sabha elections, where the Congress saw strong gains, while the NCP had the best success rate.

With 288 seats in the Maharashtra Assembly up for grabs, voting will take place on November 20, with results announced on November 30. It’s a critical battle for both alliances as they seek to secure a majority and shape the state’s future.
