New Delhi: Russia welcomed the recent steps taken by India and China to ease tensions along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). Russian Ambassador Denis Alipov emphasized that reaching a peaceful solution will need strong determination and mutual trust between the two countries.
The positive developments come just before the Brics Summit, where Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met in Kazan on October 23, marking the first meeting between them in five years. During the summit, both leaders agreed on a new plan to address the long-standing border disputes and work toward normalized relations.
“We’re pleased to see the leaders of India and China coming together to talk,” Alipov shared during a media briefing, adding that although the border issues are complex, a resolution is possible. He compared the India-China border situation to a previous border dispute between Russia and China, which was finally settled after 40 years of negotiations.
“I’m confident that India and China will eventually reach a fair solution on their border issues, but it requires an open approach and trust,” he remarked.
Alipov clarified that Russia did not facilitate the meeting but emphasized that strong relations between India and China are crucial for stability in the Eurasian region.
“India and China are the economic engines of the region,” he said, adding that Russia fully supports a strong relationship between the two without intervening in sensitive matters like the border dispute. Alipov expressed hope that the recent talks in Kazan would encourage further progress in India-China relations.
India relies heavily on Russia for military hardware, and since 2022, Russia has also become one of India’s largest suppliers of crude oil due to Western sanctions following Russia’s Ukraine conflict. Despite Russia’s increasing closeness with China, India has maintained its diplomatic approach, refraining from openly criticizing Russia’s actions in Ukraine and urging peaceful resolution through dialogue.
Alipov concluded by stressing that India and China, two major voices in the Global South, should continue working together to address global security and economic challenges.
