External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke at the BRICS Summit about the ongoing Middle East conflicts and the need to reform the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). The meeting was held in Kazan, Russia, in the BRICS+ format, where Jaishankar shared concerns over growing tensions in the Middle East and how they could impact the rest of the world.
Concerns Over Middle East Tensions
Jaishankar highlighted the “widespread anxiety” about conflicts in the Middle East, noting the risk of further spreading across the region. He emphasized the need for a balanced and lasting solution, stressing the importance of dialogue (talking things out) and diplomacy (peaceful agreements) instead of war. According to Jaishankar, India’s Prime Minister Modi has been clear: “This is not an era of war.”
He warned that the ongoing tension could seriously harm trade, affect people’s lives, and result in massive damage. To prevent further issues, Jaishankar advocated for a “two-state solution” for peace and called for zero tolerance for terrorism. “The only way forward is through fair and durable solutions,” he said.
How BRICS Can Create Fairness for All Countries
Jaishankar also spoke about creating a fairer world, especially for developing nations in the Global South. He suggested five key ways:
- Strengthening Independent Platforms: Expanding global platforms, like BRICS, to create choices and reduce dependence on major powers.
- Reforming Global Institutions: Updating old systems, such as the UNSC and the World Bank, to better represent today’s world.
- Building Production Hubs: Supporting production in more countries to make the economy fairer.
- Fixing Colonial-Era Infrastructure: Developing better global networks that don’t favor any one region and respect each nation’s borders.
- Sharing Ideas and Initiatives: Collaborating to help each country grow.
Jaishankar explained that as countries have developed, they’ve become more capable and self-sufficient, leading to a world that’s more balanced between different powers.
PM Modi’s Call for Dialogue Over Conflict
Prime Minister Narendra Modi echoed Jaishankar’s call for peace, saying, “We support dialogue and diplomacy, not war.” He reminded leaders of the importance of working together as they did during COVID-19. Modi also encouraged countries to create regulations to keep cyber and AI technologies safe.
In his powerful speech, Jaishankar left the summit with a vision: A world that values dialogue, cooperation, and peace, where everyone has a fair chance to thrive.
