South Africa Climbs to 4th in WTC Standings After Beating Bangladesh for First Test Win in Asia Since 2014
Dhaka, Bangladesh: South Africa secured a huge victory over Bangladesh in the first Test of their two-match series at Dhaka's Shere Bangla National Stadium on Thursday. This is their first Test win in Asia since 2014! With this win, the Proteas moved up to 4th place in the ICC World Test Championship standings for 2023-25.
South Africa now has a point percentage of 47.62, which helped them jump over teams like New Zealand and England. Bangladesh, on the other hand, remains in 7th place with a point percentage of 30.56, while India and Australia are still holding onto the top two spots.
How the Game Went Down:
Bangladesh's captain, Najmul Hossain Shanto, won the toss and decided to field first, hoping to take advantage of the conditions. But things didn’t go according to plan! South Africa’s bowlers dominated, bowling out Bangladesh for just 106 runs. Kagiso Rabada, Wiaan Mulder, and Keshav Maharaj each grabbed three wickets. Mahmudul Hasan Joy top-scored for Bangladesh with 30 runs off 97 balls.
Bangladesh's spinners tried to fight back, with Taijul Islam and Mehidy Hasan taking seven wickets between them, but South Africa’s Kyle Verreynne played an amazing innings, scoring a century. With support from Mulder and Dane Piedt, South Africa put up 308 runs, gaining a huge 202-run lead.
In the third innings, Rabada once again led the charge for South Africa, reducing Bangladesh to 112/6 at one point. Mehidy Hasan showed some resistance, putting up a good fight with the lower order, helping Bangladesh reach 307 runs. Rabada finished with outstanding bowling figures of 6/46—his best in Asia!
Needing just 106 runs to win, South Africa made quick work of the chase. Tony de Zorzi scored a fast 41 off 52 balls, while Tristan Stubbs remained unbeaten with 30 runs off 37 balls, hitting four boundaries and a six. South Africa won the game by seven wickets.
The second Test between Bangladesh and South Africa will begin on October 29 in Chattogram.
