Supreme Court Rejects Plea to Replace ‘Hindutva’ with 'Indian Constitutionalism'

On Monday, the Supreme Court turned down a request to change the word ‘Hindutva’ to 'Bharatiya Samidhaanitva' (which means Indian constitutionalism). The petition was filed by S.N. Kundra, a resident of Delhi, who wanted the term to better reflect India's constitutional values.

A bench led by Chief Justice of India (CJI) DY Chandrachud firmly rejected the plea, calling it an “abuse of the process.” Along with justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, the CJI made it clear that the court would not consider the petition. When the petitioner tried to argue further, the CJI interrupted, saying, “No sir, we will not entertain this.”

Court Takes Action on Madrassa Students Issue

In another important decision, the Supreme Court paused the enforcement of a notice from the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR). This notice had urged states to transfer students from unrecognized madrassas (Islamic religious schools) to government schools.

The court responded to concerns raised by the Jamiat Ulema-i-Hind, a Muslim organization, which argued that actions taken by the governments of Uttar Pradesh and Tripura could hurt students in these madrassas. The Supreme Court agreed to halt these actions for now, while it reviews the situation.
