The Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) is not happy with the recent changes to the Supreme Court’s emblem and the statue of ‘Lady Justice.’ They are upset that these changes were made without consulting the bar members, who feel they should have been involved in the decision.
What’s Different About the New Lady Justice Statue?
Traditionally, Lady Justice is shown wearing a blindfold, holding scales for fairness and a sword representing the power of the law. However, the new statue at the Supreme Court has no blindfold and holds the Constitution instead of a sword. This symbolizes that the law in India is neither blind nor harsh, but fair and just with open eyes.
This new version is meant to show that India’s justice system is evolving and leaving behind old colonial ideas. But many in the Bar Association feel left out of these decisions and want to know why these "radical changes" were made.
Bar Association's Concerns
The SCBA, in a meeting, expressed that they are “equal stakeholders” in the justice system and should have been consulted before such big changes were made. They are also concerned about the decision to create a museum in the space previously used as the judges' library. The Bar had earlier requested that this space be turned into a cafe and lounge area for lawyers, as the current cafeteria is too small for their needs.
The Bar Association is puzzled as to why these changes are happening despite their objections, with work on the new museum already underway. They believe their needs are being ignored in favor of changes that weren’t discussed with them.
