TMC Accuses Amit Shah of Breaking Election Rules in West Bengal, Urges EC to Act

TMC accuses Amit Shah of breaking election rules in West Bengal, urges EC to act on ‘political remarks’ made at an official event ahead of state bypolls

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) has accused Union Home Minister Amit Shah of violating election rules during his recent visit to West Bengal. The TMC claims that Shah made political remarks at an official event, which they say goes against the model code of conduct. They’ve urged the Election Commission (EC) to take action against him ahead of the upcoming bypolls on November 13.

According to the TMC, Shah spoke politically during the launch of new facilities at the Petrapole land port in North 24 Parganas on October 27, even though the area is part of poll-bound districts. During his speech, Shah called for a “parivartan,” or change, in the state in 2026 and assured residents that the central government would work to end infiltration and bring peace to the region.

The TMC has demanded that the EC issue a show-cause notice to Shah and direct him to avoid making political statements during official events, especially in districts holding bypolls. The TMC argued that Shah’s remarks were inappropriate and unrelated to the purpose of the event, which was to open a new passenger terminal and cargo gate, known as ‘Maitri Dwar’ at the Bangladesh border.

West Bengal’s bypolls are set for November 1 across six assembly seats, including those in North 24 Parganas, where TMC fears Shah’s comments could influence voters. TMC leaders claim that Shah’s speech went against the election guidelines and urge the EC to restrict him from making political statements during these events.

The upcoming bypolls include the Sitai constituency in Cooch Behar, Madarihat in Alipurduar, Naihati and Haroa in North 24 Parganas, Medinipur in West Medinipur, and Taldangra in Bankura. These seats became vacant after MLAs left to join this year’s Lok Sabha races.
