US Sends Back Over 1,100 Indian Migrants Amid Rising Deportations; Both Nations Aim to Tackle Illegal Immigration

Over 1,100 illegal Indian migrants deported from U.S. last year; U.S. and India strengthen efforts to tackle illegal migration. Learn more about this growing issue

The United States deported more than 1,100 people from India who had entered the country illegally between October 2023 and September 2024, a senior U.S. official said on Tuesday. The official emphasized that more needs to be done to educate people about the risks of illegal migration and the false promises from shady travel agencies.

Along with those deported during the U.S. fiscal year that ended in September, a recent charter flight carrying around 100 Indian migrants was flown back on October 22. Royce Murray, the assistant secretary for border and immigration policy at the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS), highlighted a “steady increase” in deportations of Indian nationals in recent years.

“In fiscal year 2024, which just ended, the U.S. sent back over 1,100 Indian nationals. This rise in deportations is part of a trend over the past few years,” Murray stated. She mentioned that the October 22 charter flight was one of several, adding that some migrants are also sent home on commercial flights.

Murray pointed out that, while more people from nearby regions like the Americas attempt to enter the U.S. illegally, Indian nationals are still trying to migrate illegally despite the risks. She added that DHS is working closely with India to strengthen cooperation on this issue, and she praised the support received from the Indian government.

The DHS is focused on raising awareness about lawful ways to migrate to the U.S. and the serious consequences of illegal entry. “We are committed to getting the word out, so people know the right way to enter the U.S. and the consequences of illegal routes,” Murray said.

Murray acknowledged the need to educate vulnerable groups, such as young students, who are often targets for human trafficking and scams related to illegal immigration. Ensuring they have accurate information about student visas and legal migration pathways is a priority for both countries, as they work together to address this challenge.
