Why Indian Students, Especially From Andhra and Telangana, Are Now Choosing Italy Over the US and UK for Higher Studies
More and more Indian students, especially those from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, are skipping popular destinations like the US and UK to study in Italy. Tougher visa rules in these countries have led many students to look at other options, and Italy is quickly becoming a top choice.
In 2023, Italy welcomed over 93,000 international students, and 6,100 of them were from India — with a large portion coming from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana. According to data from The Times of India, Indian students now make up the second-largest group of international students in Italy, right after students from Iran.
Why Italy?
Experts say that Italy’s education system is very appealing for several reasons:
Affordable Education: Studying in Italy is much cheaper than in countries like the US, UK, or Canada. While fees in those countries can start around Rs 25 lakh, Italian public universities offer quality programs at much lower costs, between Rs 7 lakh and Rs 10 lakh.
Unique Study Programs: Italy provides a variety of study options in areas beyond the usual fields like engineering. Students are branching into exciting fields such as hospitality, arts, design, architecture, luxury brand management, and culinary arts, which are offered at some of Italy’s top universities.
According to Abhijit Zaveri from Career Mosaic, a well-known study-abroad consultancy, more students are choosing these diverse programs as they look beyond traditional career paths. "An increasing number of students are interested in fields like arts, culinary skills, and designing, and Italy has plenty to offer in these areas," Zaveri said.
Italy’s Popularity Is Rising Fast
The interest in studying in Italy is expected to keep growing. A study by University Living, in partnership with the Italian Embassy, found that the number of Indian students in Italy might grow by over 22% by 2025 and could even jump by an impressive 500% by 2030.
The Cost of Living in Italy: Affordable, But Not Cheap
While Italy is cheaper than the US or UK, living costs can still add up. Housing is the biggest expense, taking up about 42.6% of a student’s budget. On average, students spend around €5,400 (about Rs 5 lakh) on housing, and total annual living costs are estimated to be around €12,670 (Rs 11.5 lakh).
In summary, Italy is attracting Indian students thanks to affordable fees, unique study options, and a cultural experience like no other. With its strong educational offerings, Italy is set to become an even bigger study destination for Indian students, especially those from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, in the years to come
