A recent survey in the US looked at how much sugar people eat and how it affects their water intake. Talker Research, on behalf of Hint Water, asked 2,000 Americans about their sugar habits. The results were shocking: the average person eats 36,000 grams (36 kg) of sugar every year. That’s almost 80 pounds of sugar!
Sugar and Soda The survey found that people eat about 99 grams of sugar every day, which is more than what's in two cans of soda. Many people drink sugary drinks like soda. In fact, 28% of people said they mostly drink soda in a day. Also, 34% said most of the drinks they have in a day come from their morning coffee.
Cutting Back on Sugar Despite this, 85% of people said they are trying to eat less sugar. Some believe that when they crave sugar, their body is really just thirsty and needs water. About 51% said they drink water to avoid sugar cravings. However, people only drink about 48 ounces (1.4 liters) of water daily, which is less than what's recommended.
Why People Crave Sugar The study also looked at why people crave sugar. The top reasons were stress (39%), boredom (36%), tiredness (24%), and feeling lonely (17%). When people crave sugar, they feel anxious (23%), irritable (22%), impatient (20%), and unproductive (20%).
When Do Sugar Cravings Happen? People are most likely to crave something sweet when watching a movie (31%), finishing a meal (31%), needing more energy in the middle of the day (30%), or after having a bad day at work (19%). The survey found that the most common time for cravings is 3:12 p.m., and people usually give in to their cravings after just 13 minutes.
This shows how much people love sugar and how it affects their daily lives!
