Akhilesh Yadav Accuses BJP of Delaying UP Byelections to Avoid Defeat

Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav has accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of using "old tricks" by postponing the byelections for nine Assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. On November 4, 2024, Yadav claimed the BJP was trying to prevent migrant workers, who had returned home for holidays, from voting against them.

Yadav said that many people who work outside U.P. had come back for Deepavali and Chhath festivals, and were ready to vote against the BJP. He alleged that the BJP delayed the elections to make sure these voters would return to work without casting their votes. "If the BJP thinks they will lose, they postpone the elections. This is their old tactic," Yadav said on X.

The SP leader also hinted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with U.P. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on November 3 was a part of this plan. He claimed that the BJP was likely to lose seven out of the nine seats, and they postponed the elections to avoid this defeat. However, Yadav warned that this move wouldn’t save the BJP from losing.

The Election Commission rescheduled the byelections from November 13 to November 20 after multiple political parties, including BJP and RLD, requested a date change due to social, cultural, and religious events on the original date.

The nine Assembly seats affected by the rescheduling are Sisamau, Katehri, Kundarki, Ghaziabad, Majhwan, Karhal, Khair, Phulpur, and Meerapur.
