Maharashtra's former home minister, Anil Deshmukh, was injured when his car was attacked with stones while he was going home to Katol, near Nagpur. This happened on Monday evening during his campaign for his son Salil, who is running for election as a candidate in the NCP (SP) party.
After the incident, supporters of the MVA party marched to the Katol police station, asking for the attackers to be arrested right away. Nagpur Rural police superintendent Harrsh Poddar said, "I’m heading to the scene now. Our deputy SP and inspector are already there, and we’ve started an investigation, but we can’t say anything yet."
Prominent Congress leader Balasaheb Thorat expressed his strong disapproval of what happened. He said, "There is no safety in the district where the home minister is from. I want the Election Commission to step in immediately." Mahesh Tapase, a spokesperson for NCP (SP), said, "The Election Commission must take this seriously. A former home minister being attacked with stones raises questions about politics."
Supriya Sule, the working president of NCP (SP), shared her thoughts on social media, stating, “This attack is shocking and worrying. I condemn it. We’ve never seen anyone attacked during election time, and the law and order situation in Nagpur is poor.”
Sanjay Raut, a leader from Shiv Sena UBT, also condemned the attack, saying, "It’s troubling that this happened in Nagpur, the city where the current home minister works. We need to find out if this was politically motivated or even an assassination attempt. Just days ago, Deshmukh made significant revelations in a book. This behavior is unacceptable."
Deshmukh, who was the home minister during the previous MVA government, had faced legal troubles including arrest by the ED for alleged corruption and money laundering.
