Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud’s Emotional Farewell: ‘Please Forgive Me if I Ever Hurt Anyone’
On his final day as the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud gave a heartfelt speech, expressing gratitude and asking for forgiveness if he ever “hurt anyone” during his time in the court.
In his farewell speech, CJI Chandrachud shared his deep connection to the Supreme Court. “It’s this court that keeps me going. I thank each one of you. If I ever hurt anyone, please forgive me,” he said to the packed courtroom, touched by the large gathering. He was leading the Ceremonial Bench, a special tradition to honor retiring justices.
The outgoing Chief Justice, who became the 50th head of India’s judiciary in November two years ago, spoke about his passion for hearing cases. “When my court staff asked me about today’s schedule, I told them I want to hear as many cases as I can. I didn’t want to miss a single chance to serve justice,” he shared.
Justice Chandrachud became a Supreme Court judge in May 2016. Reflecting on his journey, he said he felt “humbled” seeing so many people come to his last session. “I thought the courtroom might be empty by the afternoon, and I’d be looking at myself on the screen,” he joked. “We are like pilgrims, here for a short while to do our work and move on.”
Looking ahead, he praised his successor, Justice Sanjiv Khanna, as a “stable, solid, and dignified” person who would now lead the Supreme Court.
