Day-to-Day Trial in RG Kar Hospital Rape-Murder Case to Begin November 11

Eighty-seven days after the tragic discovery of a woman doctor’s body at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, the Kolkata court has framed charges against the main accused, Sanjay Roy. The court confirmed that the day-to-day trial would commence from November 11.

Sanjay Roy, who was arrested by the Kolkata Police a day after the body was found on August 9, is facing serious charges under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita. He is accused of rape (Section 64), causing death or a vegetative state (Section 66), and murder (Section 103).

As he was escorted out of the Sealdah court, Roy protested his innocence, claiming, "I have done nothing. I’ve been framed in this case. The government is threatening me to keep quiet."

Roy’s claims of a larger conspiracy have sparked reactions. Senior West Bengal Congress leader Adhir Chowdhury expressed concern, saying Roy’s allegations should be taken seriously. "This doesn’t seem like a crime committed by one person alone. There might be more behind it. The role of the police needs to be probed too," Chowdhury said.

Meanwhile, the CBI, which took over the case from the Kolkata Police under a Calcutta High Court order, has named Roy as the sole prime accused in its charge sheet. The investigation into this case has been ongoing, with civil society groups and citizens pushing for swift justice. A rally was held demanding that the CBI expedite its inquiry, as many still feel there is a lack of clarity.

BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar urged patience while the investigation continues. TMC’s Kunal Ghosh, on the other hand, defended the Kolkata Police’s swift action in arresting the accused. He stated, "The CBI has also named Roy as the main accused. It’s important to let the investigation play out before drawing conclusions."

Junior doctors across West Bengal are organizing rallies to demand justice for their deceased colleague, amplifying the call for a thorough and transparent investigation.
