Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak Faces Backlash After Hospital Welcome Incident

Uttar Pradesh Deputy CM Brajesh Pathak condemns lime powder lining for his welcome, amid outrage over tragedy at Jhansi hospital killing 10 newborns.

Uttar Pradesh's Deputy Chief Minister, Brajesh Pathak, faced backlash after a grand welcome at a hospital in Jhansi. On November 16, he asked the district magistrate to take action against officials who sprinkled lime powder along his path.

In a video, Pathak said, “It’s sad that someone was putting lime powder on the road before I arrived. I strongly condemn this and want the District Magistrate to find out who is responsible and take action against them. I will not accept this kind of behavior."

Pathak was visiting the Maharani Lakshmi Bai Medical College to meet the families of newborns who tragically died in a fire in the children’s ward on November 15. Before his arrival, workers lined the road with lime powder, which drew a lot of criticism, especially from opposition parties. A video of the preparation went viral on social media.

The Congress party criticized this act, calling it "insensitive." They wrote, “While families are grieving over the loss of their children, lime was being sprayed to welcome the Deputy CM. This showcases the government’s insensitivity." There were even reports that the hospital compound was cleaned up just before Pathak’s visit.

A fire broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at around 10:45 PM, likely due to an electrical short circuit. Sadly, 10 children died, and 16 others were injured, with some still fighting for their lives. Some babies in different parts of the NICU were able to be rescued.

The Maharani Lakshmi Bai Medical College, established in 1968, is one of the largest government hospitals in the Bundelkhand area of Uttar Pradesh.
