On Saturday, a powerful explosion at the Quetta Railway Station in Pakistan’s Balochistan province killed at least 24 people and injured more than 40. The blast happened just as a train was about to leave for Peshawar, as reported by Reuters.
According to Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Mohammad Baloch, this could have been a suicide attack, but he said it was too soon to confirm. An investigation is underway to find out exactly what caused the blast.
Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind stated that police and security teams arrived quickly at the scene. The Bomb Disposal Squad is gathering evidence to learn more about the explosion. Authorities have warned that the number of deaths could rise since some of those injured are in critical condition.
An emergency has been declared at nearby hospitals to provide quick medical help to the injured, as reported by Dawn News.
Background on Balochistan's Security Situation
Balochistan is Pakistan’s largest and poorest province, though it is rich in natural resources. The region has long been troubled by separatist groups who want independence. These groups have, in the past, targeted large projects funded by foreign countries, especially China, accusing them of benefiting from Balochistan’s resources while leaving the local people out of any profits.
One of the major groups, the Baloch Liberation Army (BLA), often claims responsibility for attacks on security forces and people from other parts of Pakistan, particularly Punjabis. In August, the BLA admitted to carrying out a deadly coordinated attack that left at least 39 people dead.
The situation in Balochistan remains tense, with security forces working to protect local and foreign interests in the region.
