Heated Protests in Jammu and Kashmir Assembly Over Article 370 Debate

Jammu and Kashmir Assembly erupts in protests as BJP opposes Article 370 discussions, with MLAs clashing over the region’s special status and identity.

For the third day in a row, the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly saw heated protests as members from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) loudly opposed discussions on restoring Article 370, which previously granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir. BJP MLAs began shouting slogans and stormed to the front of the House, disrupting the proceedings.

Following Speaker Abdul Rahim Rather's orders, 12 BJP MLAs were removed from the Assembly for storming into the well, a restricted area in the House. In solidarity, 11 more BJP members walked out in protest after their colleagues were evicted.

Earlier in the session, Khurshid Ahmad Sheikh, an MLA from the Awami Ittehad Party and brother of Baramulla MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid, was also removed after joining the protest in the well of the House. Sheikh accused the National Conference, the ruling party, and BJP of a “fixed match,” claiming that only certain MLAs are being punished while others who oppose the Article 370 discussions are being ignored. Sheikh called the National Conference's resolution to restore Article 370 “just for show.”

Friday’s session began with People's Conference leader Sajad Lone and People's Democratic Party MLA Waheed Para raising a banner supporting the restoration of Article 370, sparking a fresh wave of protests from BJP members, who stood on tables in anger.

The uproar follows a recent resolution introduced by Deputy Chief Minister Surinder Choudhary, calling for the Centre to start discussions with Jammu and Kashmir’s elected representatives on the region’s special status. The resolution argues that restoring Article 370 would help preserve Jammu and Kashmir’s unique identity, culture, and rights while keeping national unity intact.

For two consecutive days, the Assembly has been adjourned due to the clash between BJP MLAs and marshals, leaving the future of the special status resolution uncertain
