Hezbollah Open to Ceasefire in Lebanon but Skeptical of U.S. Role Amid Escalating Conflict

Hezbollah open to peace in Lebanon but doubts U.S. intervention will halt Israel conflict; violence escalates amid failed ceasefire talks.

Hezbollah, Lebanon's Iran-backed political and military group, has voiced support for any initiative that could bring peace to Lebanon. However, the group remains doubtful that the outcome of the recent U.S. election will significantly impact the situation. Following Donald Trump’s return to the White House, Hezbollah lawmaker Ibrahim al-Moussawi stated that while the administration may change, U.S. policy on Israel has remained largely consistent over the years. "It might be a change in the party who is in power, but when it comes to Israel, they have more or less the same policy," Moussawi told Reuters. "We want to see actions, we want to see decisions taken," he added, indicating that Hezbollah values tangible efforts over promises.

The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel has intensified recently, with heightened clashes since late September. Both sides have exchanged heavy fire, especially in Lebanon’s south and east, as well as near the Israeli-Lebanese border. Israel claims it is focused on striking Hezbollah’s infrastructure and military assets while avoiding civilian areas. However, Lebanese officials and Hezbollah argue that the rising death toll and massive destruction suggest that civilian areas are being impacted severely. Over 3,000 Lebanese civilians have reportedly lost their lives, and the country’s southern and eastern regions have sustained significant damage.

Amid the escalating conflict, U.S. attempts to mediate a truce failed last week when a proposed 60-day ceasefire didn’t gain traction. Moussawi expressed frustration, highlighting the devastation in Lebanon’s predominantly Shi'ite regions and Beirut’s southern neighborhoods due to Israel's attacks. “Our hearts are broken; we are losing very dear lives. This feeling that [Israel] cannot be punished or brought to international justice is a result of U.S. support which renders them immune to accountability,” he said.

Hezbollah holds the U.S. accountable, suggesting that American influence could be crucial in halting the ongoing violence. “America is a full partner in what's happening because they can exercise influence to stop this destruction,” Moussawi concluded, emphasizing the group's desire for a diplomatic resolution while remaining skeptical of U.S. intervention.
