India Aims to Build Global Friendships in Multipolar World, Says Jaishankar

India expands global friendships as Minister Jaishankar outlines a vision of a multipolar world, emphasizing partnerships and India's cultural openness.

India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasized on Saturday that the country is pursuing a wide range of international friendships, reflecting a shift toward a multipolar world where alliances are no longer exclusive. Speaking at the launch of the book Friends: India’s Closest Strategic Partners by Professor Sreeram Chaulia in New Delhi, Jaishankar described India’s approach as that of a "Vishwamitra" – a friend to the world.

“India seeks to be friends with as many countries as possible,” Jaishankar stated, adding that India is not a “dogmatic civilization,” and its diverse cultural and historical background fosters openness to multiple partnerships. He also noted that India’s growing capability and confidence enable it to engage the world on its own terms.

The minister also touched on challenges in some friendships, citing cases where freedom of expression in one country may be seen as interference by another. Sensitivity to sovereignty and territorial integrity, Jaishankar said, will always play a role in evaluating international partnerships.

Jaishankar credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi for reshaping India’s global relations over the past decade, particularly with QUAD partners – the United States, Japan, and Australia – who, he noted, have “overcome historical hesitations” to form strong alliances. He added that even countries like the UAE and Israel, from historically complex regions, are now deeply engaged with India.

In a nod to the importance of diverse partnerships, Jaishankar highlighted that multipolarity shapes India’s relationships with powers like Russia and France. He stated, “The changes we see today in our global friendships are largely due to PM Modi’s proactive leadership.”

Jaishankar concluded by reflecting on the transformation in India’s diplomacy: “A decade ago, some key partnerships were stalled, with little high-level engagement or external pressure to limit our ties. Today, India stands confidently on the world stage with a range of strategic partners.”
