The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has urged the Bangladeshi government to take firm action to protect the Hindu community after recent incidents of violence in Chittagong. Days ago, several shops and homes belonging to tribal Hindus were set on fire, raising concerns over their safety.
The tension reportedly began after a local youth posted a Facebook comment critical of ISKCON, sparking anger within the Hindu community. Protesters clashed with law enforcement, throwing bricks and objects at police forces, according to local journalist Saifuddin Tuhin, who provided insights to ANI over the phone. Following these clashes, a joint operation involving police and army was launched to control the situation.
Amid escalating religious tensions, some groups in Bangladesh have called for a ban on ISKCON. This development has created uncertainty for the Hindu population in Bangladesh, particularly since the recent departure of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. Reports of violence against religious minorities have surfaced in the wake of her government’s fall, including incidents of vandalism, arson, and attacks on Hindu properties and leaders.
In response to these events, Indian Army Chief Upendra Dwivedi had a virtual discussion on Wednesday with his Bangladeshi counterpart, General Waker-Uz-Zaman, focusing on defense cooperation and regional issues. This conversation marks the first high-level interaction between the two countries’ armies since August, and it took place during a period of increased concerns over Hindu minority safety in Bangladesh.
