India-China Disengagement Progress in Ladakh, Jaishankar Calls it a "Welcome Step"
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has described recent progress in India-China troop disengagement as a positive step toward resolving ongoing border tensions. Speaking on November 3, 2024, he welcomed the development, noting that Indian and Chinese forces have successfully disengaged at two critical points in eastern Ladakh—Demchok and Depsang Plains.

Jaishankar highlighted that the disengagement process has allowed the Indian Army to begin verification patrolling in these areas. Patrolling at Demchok commenced on November 1, 2024, marking a significant milestone in the efforts to de-escalate the four-year standoff between the two countries.

“Our relations with China have been deeply disturbed since 2020 due to the border situation,” Jaishankar said, referring to the tense situation along the Line of Actual Control (LAC). "This disengagement is a welcome step, and it opens the door for further progress."

Despite the positive development, Jaishankar reminded the audience that large numbers of Chinese troops remain deployed along the LAC. India has also maintained a strong counter-deployment in the region. He added, "We have to see what direction things go after this disengagement, but this step gives us hope that other improvements could follow."

Jaishankar's comments come just days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Russia, which set the stage for further diplomatic and military talks. Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri recently confirmed that an agreement was reached after weeks of negotiations, resolving key issues stemming from the 2020 Galwan Valley clash—the most severe military conflict between the two nations in decades.
