India Optimistic About Donald Trump’s Return as U.S. President

India welcomes Donald Trump’s upcoming presidency, hoping for stronger U.S.-India ties on trade, security, and counter-terrorism. Trump-Modi bond seen as key.

The Indian government and many Indian citizens are feeling hopeful about Donald Trump’s upcoming presidency in the U.S., set to begin on January 20, 2025. Despite some concerns over trade tariffs, India sees the return of Trump as a positive step due to the strong relationship between him and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

After Trump won the U.S. election and Republicans gained power in both the Senate and House, PM Modi was quick to congratulate him on social media. The two leaders also had a friendly phone call that lasted around 30 minutes, where Trump praised PM Modi and India, calling them “true friends.”

Why India Welcomes Trump’s Presidency

India looks forward to Trump’s leadership for several reasons:

  • Support for Indo-Pacific: Trump restarted the “QUAD” alliance in 2017 to balance power in Asia, which includes India, Japan, Australia, and the U.S.
  • Backing in Conflicts: During past border tensions with China, Trump offered quick support to India.
  • Military Deals: Trump helped approve leasing military drones and backed other defense support to India.
  • Understanding on Issues: Trump was sympathetic about India’s internal decisions, like the removal of Article 370 in Kashmir and the Citizenship Amendment Act.
  • Trade and Economy: While trade talks between the two nations were sometimes difficult, Trump encouraged investments between India and the U.S.
  • Energy Transition: Trump recognized that India and other developing countries need time to shift away from fossil fuels.

Trump has also shown strong support for India’s sovereignty and was a firm ally in global anti-terrorism efforts. In 2019, when India launched airstrikes in Pakistan against terrorist camps, Trump acknowledged India’s right to defend itself.

Trump’s New Global Goals

Trump’s second term could bring new shifts in global policies:

  • Ukraine War: Trump may push for a peaceful solution in the Ukraine conflict, hoping to save funds for domestic needs rather than foreign defense.
  • Middle East Peace: Trump’s team could encourage Israel to end operations in Gaza soon, especially as key militant leaders have been targeted. If Lebanon’s Hezbollah group agrees to peace on Israel’s border, a lasting solution may be possible.
  • Counter-Terrorism: Trump is expected to continue a tough stance on terrorism, like when he took action against Iran’s Qassem Soleimani in 2020.

India is looking forward to working with Trump on strengthening their ties even further. With Trump set to take office next January, the two countries could build on the positive partnership they shared in the past, with events like the “Howdy Modi” rally in Texas and the “Namaste Trump” event in Ahmedabad, which showed the mutual respect and friendship between Trump, Modi, and the Indian people.
