The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) criticized the Justin Trudeau administration for blocking an Australian media outlet in Canada shortly after it aired comments by External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar during a joint press event with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal called this a “hypocritical” move by Canada, questioning its commitment to freedom of speech.
"We understand that the social media presence of an important diaspora outlet has been blocked in Canada just after it shared the press conference between EAM Jaishankar and Penny Wong,” Jaiswal said. "This highlights Canada's double standards on free speech," he added.
Jaishankar's Remarks
During the Canberra press conference, Jaishankar openly criticized Canada on three points:
Unsubstantiated Allegations: Jaishankar noted that Canada frequently makes claims about India without evidence.
Surveillance of Indian Diplomats: He emphasized that Canada’s surveillance of Indian diplomats is “unacceptable.”
Political Space for Anti-India Elements: Jaishankar pointed to the room given in Canada for anti-India activities, implying that Canada tolerates, or even supports, these actions.
Rising Tensions Between India and Canada
Relations between India and Canada have been strained, especially after Canada linked senior Indian diplomats to the murder investigation of Khalistani separatist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. This recent media censorship only adds to the tension, with India viewing Canada’s actions as a suppression of free speech when criticism is directed at it
