India Tops US Student List: 330,000+ Enrolled

More than 330,000 Indian students are studying in the United States right now, making India the number one country for international students in the US for the first time in 15 years. India has passed China in the number of students studying in America for the school year 2023-24.

According to the latest Open Doors Report 2024, there are 331,602 Indian students in the US. This is a 23% increase from last year, when there were 268,923 Indian students. Last year, China was the top country sending students to the US, but now India holds that title.

India makes up 29% of all international students in the US. The top five countries for international students in the US for 2023-24 are:

1. India

2. China (277,398 students)

3. South Korea (43,149 students)

4. Canada (28,998 students)

5. Taiwan (23,157 students)

Total, the US has welcomed over 1.12 million international students this year, from more than 210 different countries.

Eric Garcetti, the US ambassador, mentioned in an interview that India and the US are becoming closer through education. He noted that there has been a 50% increase in Indian students in just the last two years.

Interestingly, there’s also been a huge increase in American students coming to study in India. The number of American students in India jumped from 300 to 1,300 last year.

In the US, Indian students continue to be the largest group in graduate programs, such as masters and PhD levels. The number of Indian graduate students jumped 19% to 196,567. The number of undergraduate students from India also went up by 13% to 36,053, while non-degree students decreased by 28% to 1,426.

This report was released during International Education Week, which celebrates global education. An event at Johns Hopkins University, which is one of the oldest research universities in the US, introduced a new program to help women in science and technology.

The new 'Women in STEMM Fellowship' will provide support, training, and resources for early-career women scientists in India. Johns Hopkins aims to help these women grow as leaders in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and medicine.

Garcetti said that many American universities are now giving scholarships to Indian students, making it easier for them to study in the US. This partnership benefits everyone by helping more students achieve their dreams.
